Above Series are chairs that visitors can actually sit on in the exhibition hall. The artist was inspired by a story of a tree, called Kiura. This special tree changed itself in order to preserve itself for a long time. This inspired the artist to think about the truth that all living organisms continuously change themselves in order to compensate for what they lack. This is also true of things we throw away, such as tree branches, discarded wire, and string; perhaps these can also change themselves for preservation. By the act of fastening these materials together, discarded objects are born again as a beautiful and functional object, like this chair. This process may be seen as a manifestation of the materials’ inherent preservation instinct.
