Home and Away

Berni Searle's Home and Away is about the meaning of boundaries and the identity of immigrants. By projecting the image of the artist hovering above the sea between Morocco and Spain on walls facing each other, Searle asks about the identity of illegal North African immigrants to Spain and about the way they define their home. As a South African woman, the artist has focused on gender and racial identity in her works. But here, she redirects her subject matter to the pain and suffering of those who are alienated from the community of the nations and live on the boundaries.
