Tephra Horizon

French artist Adrien Missika, based in Berlin and working actively in Europe, has worked in various genres such as photographs, videos, sculptures, and installations. Missika calls himself a ¢®¡Æprofessional traveler,¢®¡¾ as he travels to India, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, and other so-called ¢®¡ÆThird World¢®¡¾ countries. From the record of his travels, we can see the tough journey to find out the subject as the other, which can be seen as the process of coming back and forth from territorialization to deterritorialization. The piece presented at the Busan Biennale, Tephra Horison (2013), shows a huge landscape of a volcanic zone shot with a camera floating in the air. The compelling visual of the landscape reminds the viewer of the sublime experience from Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich¢®¯s paintings. ¢®¡ÆTephra,¢®¡¾ fragmented rocks or particles from a volcanic eruption, make their roots at the transient moment of a massive explosion. The camera floats in the air unsteadily, reaching close to the volcanic zone.
