CALENDAR: Time, Tides and Memories

The Theme of the Sea Art Festival is With Songdo: remembrance, marks, people. So my work develops the concept of memory and the relationship of people to this specific place, the beach of Songdo.

My work is a time counter, a calendar of memory. The sculpture is made so that it changes with the tides. My sculpture changes shape when the sea level falls and rises again. The sea changes are the passage of time that brings good periods and bad periods to a place. Good times and bad times happen in circle.

The sculpture is made of three circles: past, present and future. Each circle is formed by 365 bamboo poles as a full year, a full circle.

The circles open and close for the effect of the sea tides. They visually present the flowing of time. But as Songdo's destiny is tightly bond to the sea, my sculpture uses the sea to mark the passage of time and the creation of memories and destinies.
