“Ma” is the Kekkai(spiritual barrier).

In Japan the boundary of space is not considered as material but more like consciousness. The space between inside and outside of a house is divided by thin paper windows. Japan also has “Engawa” between the house and the yard, which is covered by a roof, but still outside. Japan has a vague sense of boundaries.
