Like fish out of water

The notion of being awkward due to uncertain and unfamiliar circumstances. This massive fish, erected from the sand, stand a few feet away from its natural environment. Trying to adapt to this unfamiliar environment, it tries to reconstruct itself according to the new environment that it¡¯s in. Towering at 6m, this creature transmogrify itself into a structure that blends itself well into this concrete environment. It shelled itself into a cold and bleak exterior, reminiscent of buildings and structures that we create. Society creates monuments as a sense of prolific power and dominance that is identifiable to the status and the prestige which we are trying to strive towards._ Buildings are constructed and created by man to amplify their stature in the society. We no longer recognize countries that provide welfare to the unfortunates, or contribute aids and funds to disaster struck neighbors. We are identified by the things that we are able to create. Buildings and monuments are evident on how countries are identified. The tallest buildings constructed in the most complicated design. These are creations that unfortunately identifies us globally.

Thus this creature is striving to compete with the rest of the other monuments, to co-exist in this system. Trying to sustain itself against the rest of the monuments and surrounding structures, it hopes to merge itself with its new surroundings, and model itself while competing with its predecessor. In this current state of affairs, we have to adapt to survive. The swordfish has past mythological reference to a Singapore Malay folklore, 'Singapura dilanggar todak'. It also has significant reference to the beach, which was once occupied by the Japanese that modeled this beach as a recreation resort, resembling Matsushima. Tying these two components together, the swordfish design was thus represented in this sculpture that further enforces the theme of aquatic marine life that takes place at Songdo beach, whilst trying merge the traditional, with the modern. Place strategically in-between the sea and the city area, the location of the sculpture is ideal is striking the balance between the naturalistic environment and the artificial and superficial one.
