Red carpet

¡®Red Carpet¡¯ is an installation based on the increasing divisions present in contemporary society. A 50 meters long red carpet is placed on the beach, leading from the strolling path across the sand into the sea. It is enclosed with velvet rope and brass poles, typical of contemporary media events, where the so called very important persons are separated from the ordinary crowd. In the installation red carpet leads into the depths of the Songdo beach. It is a sort of a mirage, suggesting a grand gala event.

¡®Red Carpet¡¯ is referring to the current global socio-economic system, which is often elitist, unjust and inhumane. There is a gap between the wealthy and the deprived. Many of the latter will never be able to enjoy a calm careless day on a beach. The installation brings to mind the many divides, often less subtle then the velvet rope, which exist in present time around the world. It is a kind of experiment on how people, exhibition visitors, beach goers will react to it. Will they leave it intact, walk on it, or will they try to reclaim the land which the installation proclaimed exclusive?
