New Star, New Birth

Drawing on landscape. Landscape is where you finish. Landscape is where everything that is in the landscape clashes, happens, lives, dies and communicates. Despite men's efforts to shape landscape, to possess it, to humanize it, to make of it an extension of its will and a place for its need to be fulfilled, landscape maintains its own autonomy, just slightly interfered by the humans efforts. Landscape is the mirror image of every observer. Landscape is not an objective entity. The complex of phenomena that condenses in our consciousness as outside ourselves, passes through the filter and the interpretation of senses and feelings. The landscape is what we tell to ourselves about what is outside ourselves. So there is more of us in it than we could think. Therefore exploring the landscape is not a geographical expedition, but an anthropological one. There is the classic opposition between portrait and landscape: both are correctly seen as the two complementary approaches that artists have in their investigations. Portrait is a land of intentions, landscape of consequences. Together they are represent the sum of a process, from its premises to its conclusions. Therefore looking into somebody¡¯s eyes or where he/she is looking at, will take you to the same place.

So drawing on landscape is a way to draw inside the viewers, every alteration that we operate on the landscape will have a repercussion on society. With my work 'New Star, New Birth' I want both to commemorate the incredible growth of Busan and all Korea as an economic power but at the same time remember that every country has to consider the consequences that it's growth will have on it's society. A growing society has a deep impact on its landscape, which seems to be passive and usable at man's will. But so is not and man has to remember that such a frailty has to be respected as it disruption can have great repercussions. So my work want to draw the attention on the primitive beauty of the ocean but also symbolize the bloom of the city of Busan, whose wealth floats on the ocean, because it depends deeply on the ocean.
