Bliss Castle, 2017, aluminum steel bird cages, solar outdoor lights, neon paint, 160¡¿360¡¿650cm
Bliss Castle Kang¡¯s recent Birds series throws many ideas for
thought on the pleasures and happiness that we pursue. What the artist fundamentally
proposes is a message of courage and hope to life of suffering in alienation
and deprivation, and an analogy of such process and outcome to the relationship
between bird and birdcage. A castle of one¡¯s dwelling might be a safe nest but
at the same time, it could also become their prison. This point is symbolically
demonstrated in the pink-painted cages. The white bird visible above the blue
ocean powerfully reminds us of freedom and happiness for all those who pursuethis
place.
