All a man can do is look upon it

The Filipino artist Felix Albert Bacolor is inspired by monster stories from his childhood, as well as by novels such as Herman Melville¡¯s Moby Dick (1851), and films like Jaws (1975) and King Kong>(1933). The western point of view as exemplified in these works of literature and film demonstrates the human failure to conquest nature rather than their success. However, Bacolor¡¯s gigantic white whale on Dadaepo Beach is open to various interpretations, not only from this point of view but also from social, political, philosophical and spiritual significance. A large white whale hangs dead from an industrial crane, illustrating the antipodal structure of human ambitions and nature. The title All a man can do is look upon it was inspired by a phrase suggestive of a dead whale in the Hungarian film Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) by Béla Tarr.
