Sea Cube, 2017, iron plate, tempered glass, 250x250x300cm, Commission for the Sea Art Festival 2017
Sea Cube Sea Cube began with the question as to exactly what
lies beneath grand nature, which meets the horizon and makes up the seashore,
and is thus unfathomable in its entirety by the human sight. This project
involved burying a 3m cube in the sand, filled with sea water and covered with
a transparent plate. The mass of a structure is generally described through the
measurement of its width, length, and height, but a sense of presence realized
by filling it with sea water escapes such numerical description. This work is a kind of experiment which
questions whether material mass can be converted into presence. The geometric
traces created on the atypical curves of nature conveys, at least momentarily,
a heterogeneous presence to the audience. However, many of the human traces
accumulated from time immemorial are eventually absorbed into nature and
returned to the landscape of Mother Nature. And this natural flow will continue
to repeat itself right here and now, presenting a unique spectacle to the
viewer.
