The Busan Biennale 2012 has ended successfully. Now we have over a year left until the next Busan Biennale2014, however, there is no need to be disappointed. Another art festival of Busan Biennale with a unique charm will be held this year at Songdo Beach from September 14 through October 13; that is the Sea Art Festival 2013.

The Sea Art Festival was found in 1987, a year before 88 Seoul Olympics, as a pre-Olympic event. Since its inception, the Sea Art Festival was yearly held through 1993 and took five years of hiatus after the 8th Sea Art Festival in 1995 due to financial reasons. Along with the birth of the Busan Biennale Organizing Committee, the Sea Art Festival has been held as a part of the Busan Biennale¡¯s main exhibitions since the 2000 Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival through 2010.

Until 2004, the Sea Art Festival was heavily characterized as site-specific in a form of outdoor installation that emphasizes on communication between artists and the natural marine environment rather than curatorial execution. However, the Sea Art Festival, Busan Biennale 2006 drastically expanded its exhibition space and introduced public art to realize art in everyday life, and in 2008, it again became a hot issue for utilizing a variety of indoor spaces in the city beyond its original environment, the sea. Furthermore, in 2010, Busan Biennale pursued unity by integrating three existing events, and in 2011, in an attempt to make a new leap as a cultural brand representing the city of Busan, the Sea Art Festival departed as an independent event.

The last 26 years of the Sea Art Festival were an eventful history illustrated by consolidation and expansion. However, there are three key characteristics that have been constantly shaping the identity the event: its experimental approach in breaking away from formal exhibition space and choosing the natural environment, the sea, as its exhibition ground, the openness of its outdoor space, and lastly, its will to bring art closer to the audience.

2013 is the year of the Sea Art Festival. The event will be held for 30 days from September 14 through October 13 at Songdo Beach, marking its 100th anniversary.

It was the first public beach in Korea, which was called Naples of the East during the 60s and 70s, attracting many locals and tourists. Due to degradation in water quality and hurricane in the 80s, it lost its function as a beach, and as the center of Busan shifted from Jung-Gu and Seo-Gu to Dong-Bu-San-Gwon, Songdo Beach gradually became just the remains in people¡¯s memories. Through various coastal renovations and maintenance projects carried after 2000, Songdo Beach regained its function, and by restoring its famous diving boards and cable cars, it is now ready to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Songdo Beach¡¯s attempts to recover its past glory have great significance and value in its efforts to explore and restore its original form. This is not limited just to Songdo Beach and is also a related matter to the declining old downtown of Busan that centers around Jung-Gu and Seo-Gu. Choosing Songdo Beach again as the venue for the Sea Art Festival 2013 following the last Sea Art Festival 2011 was for this reason.

The exhibition theme of the 2013 Sea Art Festival is ¡®With Songdo: Remembrance¡¤Marks¡¤People.¡¯ Proposed by the Busan based artist, Tae-Won Park, this exhibition¡¯s theme addresses what Songdo Beach and the Sea Art Festival have in common. To explore and restore the Sea Art Festival¡¯s original form is to revive the will and the passion of the local artists who found the Sea Art Festival. The theme also reflects the intent to conserve and expand intangible assets that are the embodiments of living history of art in Busan through institutional foundation, raise cultural awareness of the local community, and generate social discourse through creating wider range of social values. The theme suggests that Songdo¡¯s glorious past (Remembrance), changing present (Marks), and future yet to come (People) mirror the Sea Art Festival (With Songdo) itself, and hopes Songdo to become a platform for temporal and spatial mediation and communication where variety of values can encounter.

The Sea Art Festival 2013 will have a total of 35 artworks on display, including 20 works selected through an international competition and 15 invitational works. We believe we are not the only ones who look forward to see the 35 contemporary artworks installed by the sea of Songdo.

In addition to the Sea Art Fun Zone prepared in collaboration with cultural organizations in Busan, the Sea Art Festival will also comprise a variety of programs such as performances, DJs, and smaller events where you will be able to enjoy the taste of the Sea Art Festival. How about spending your fall in Busan with the Sea Art Festival in September?
