Q. 2015바다미술제의 전시감독으로 선정된 소감을 부탁드립니다. 

 A. 큰 행사를 맡게 되어 영광입니다. 오래전부터 관심 있게 지켜보았던 이번 행사를 제가 기획할 수 있게 될 거라고는 미처 생각하지 못했습니다. 그래서인지 이 행사를 준비하는 것 자체가 저에게는 기쁨입니다. 가슴 설레고 벅찹니다. 물론 앞으로 어렵고 힘든 일이 닥치겠지만, 그럴 때마다 이러한 초심을 지니고 바다미술제를 열심히 준비하겠습니다. 

Q. 2015바다미술제의 주제를 ‘보다 ― 바다와 씨앗(See ― Sea & Seed)’으로 정했는데, 주제를 생각하게 된 배경과, 주제가 가지고 있는 의미에 대해 간단하게 설명해주세요.

 A. 소금기 가득한 바다의 해수면에 씨앗이 뿌려지고 발아해서 튼실한 식물로 자라날 수 있다는 상상적 주제는 이번에 새로이 바다미술제의 공간이 된 다대포해수욕장이 현대미술의 훌륭한 장으로 변화될 수 있다는 기대를 담은 것입니다. 이곳에 문화예술의 씨앗을 발아시키고 가꾸어 나가자는 청유의 손짓을 하는 것이지요. 전시감독으로서 새로운 공간은 모험이자 실험입니다. 시민들에게 휴양지로 익숙한 다대포해수욕장이 낯설게 침투하는 예술들로 인해서 엉뚱하지만 멋진 장소로 변화되길 기대합니다. 시민들에게 이러한 주제가 익숙하게 전달되고 각인되도록 하기 위해서 저는 한글의 ‘보다’와 ‘바다’ 그리고 영어의 에스(S)로 시작하는 단어들의 동음적 운율을 고안했습니다.

Q. 야외 전시 경력이 많으신데, 전시감독으로서 본 다대포해수욕장만이 가지고 있는 특징과 장점이 있다면?

 A. 2004임진강시각예술축제 책임큐레이터, 2008창원아시아미술제 전시감독, 2014금강자연미술비엔날레 전시총감독 등을 맡았는데, 그 중 야외 현장은 변수가 있어 흥미롭지만 늘 긴장의 연속입니다. 다대포해수욕장의 특징이라면, 백사장이 매우 넓다는 것, 밀물과 썰물의 교차가 그다지 크지 않다는 것, 지하철 공사로 주변이 어수선하다는 것, 해수욕장 인근에 문화적, 상업적 시설이 그다지 많지 않다는 것 등을 꼽을 수 있겠군요. 이 모든 것이 행사를 위한 단점이자 장점입니다. 따라서 주변의 환경 자체를 이번 행사에 어떻게 연동시키고 차별화시킬 것인지를 동시에 고려하고 있습니다.  

Q. Please tell us your feelings about becoming the Artistic Director of Sea Art Festival 2015. 

 A. I am honored to be in charge of a great event. I never thought that I'll be able to plan this event that I've been keeping an eye on with interest from long ago. Perhaps that's why preparing for this event makes me happy. My heart feels excited with overflowing joy. Although I'll surely be faced with difficulties and hardships from now on, I'll diligently prepare for the Sea Art Festival with this original intention.

Q. You have chosen the theme of Sea Art Festival 2015 to be ‘See ― Sea & Seed’. Please explain how this theme was come up with and briefly explain the significance that this theme has.

 A. The imaginative theme that a seed can be sown, germinate and grown into a solid plant on the surface of the sea filled with saltiness is the one containing an expectation that Dadaepo Beach, which recently became a new space for the Sea Art Festival, can be transformed into a wonderful scene for contemporary fine art. It is like germinating and growing the seed of cultural art at this location. A new place means adventure and experimentation for an artistic director. I expect that Dadaepo Beach, which is familiar to the citizens as a place of recreation, will be transformed into a whimsical but splendid place because of the artworks that penetrate in an unfamiliar way. To deliver this theme to citizens in a familiar way, I have conceived 'SEE', 'SEA' and the English words starting with 'S' that sound alike and rhyme with these words.

Q. You have a lot of outdoor exhibition experience. What are the unique characteristics and advantages of Dadaepo Beach?

 A. I was the Chief Curator for the Imjin River Visual Art Festival 2004, Artistic Director for the Changwon Asia Art Festival 2008 and General Artistic Director for the Geumgang Nature Art Festival 2014. The outdoor sites were interesting because of thier having variables. For the characteristics of Dadaepo Beach, we can pick out the facts that the sandy beach is very wide, there isn't a great tidal range of high tide and ebb tide, and the surrounding area is unsettled because of the subway construction or the fact that there aren't many cultural and commercial facilities near the beach, etc. All these things are the disadvantages as well as being advantages for the event. Therefore, we're considering how to link the surrounding environment itself with the upcoming event and make it distinctive at the same time.

Q. 작가 섭외 과정이 한창 진행 중일 텐데, 어떠한 방향으로 작가를 선정하고 계신지 설명해주세요.

 A. 원로, 중진, 신진에 이르는 국내외의 30여 분의 다양한 작가들을 모실 계획입니다. 이번 바다미술제는 그 동안 익숙했던 기념비적 조각 위주의 전시를 탈피합니다. 물론 이번에 조각 작품도 초대되지만, 주로 바다와 주변 환경의 장소적 맥락을 적극적으로 해석하는 설치 작품, 아울러 퍼포먼스를 동반한 개념적 미술을 탐구하는 작가들을 많이 초대했습니다. 예술가-시민 그리고 미술가-인문학자-문학가 사이의 협업을 도모하는 콜라보레이션 작업도 초대했습니다.  

Q. 이번 2015바다미술제에서 전시감독으로서 가장 강조하고 싶은 부분은 무엇인가요?

 A. 이번 바다미술제는 수평적( ― )인 해변의 공간을 수직적( | )이고 파형(波形)적인 공간, 그러니까 마치 물결과 같은 공간들과 접목해서, 다대포해수욕장의 전시 공간 자체를 신비한 ‘마술적 공간’으로 변주하는 것이 하나의 관건입니다. 발굴프로젝트를 통해 여러 개의 컨테이너를 매장하는 방식으로 반지하 공간을 만들거나 모래로 쌓아 올려 만든 몇 개의 고원이나 널찍한 언덕도 만들 계획입니다. 이 위에 다양한 모습으로 선보이는 작품들을 기대해도 좋겠습니다. 아울러 주간과 야간에 달라지는 전시의 풍경도 볼만할 것 같네요. 

Q. 2015바다미술제를 기대하고 있을 많은 시민들에게 한마디 부탁드립니다.

 A. 시민 여러분의 관심과 기대에 부합하는 멋진 바다미술제를 만들겠습니다. 응원해 주시고, 지켜봐 주세요. 

Q. You must be at the peak of the artist recruitment process. Please explain how you are selecting the artists.

 A. I'm planning to invite various artists including about thirty elderly artists and leading and rising domestic and foreign artists. The upcoming Sea Art Festival departs from the monumental sculpture centered exhibition that we've previously held. Although sculpture works will also be present, we've invited many artists who explore conceptual art accompanied by performance in addition to the installation artworks that actively interpret the site context of the sea and the surrounding environment. I also invited the works of collaboration aiming at the artist-humanist-writer collaboration.

Q. What would you like to emphasize most as Artistic Director at the upcoming Sea Art Festival 2015?

 A. A crucial point in the upcoming Sea Art Festival is varying the horizontal ( ― ) space of the seashore into a vertical ( | ) and wave-like space. What I mean is varying the exhibition area of Dadaepo Beach itself into a magical space by grafting spaces that seem like waves. We're planning to create a semi-underground space with a method of burying many container boxes, or make several plateaus or spacious hills through the excavation project. You can look forward to the artworks that we’ll show above this project. I think the changing scenery of the exhibition during the daytime and nighttime will also be worth seeing.

Q. Please say a word for the many citizens who are looking forward to the Sea Art Festival 2015.

 A. I'll create a wonderful Sea Art Festival which corresponds to your interests and expectations. Please cheer for us and keep an eye on us.
