부산비엔날레는 2014년 6월 이후 운영위원장 직무 대행 체제로 운영되어오다 지난 4월 10일부터 새 집행위원장 선출 절차를 밟아왔습니다. 선정위원회의 후보자 압축과정과 조직위원장의 내정 후, 현 동아대학교 조각과 임동락 교수가 지난 5월 21일 제2차 임시총회의 최종 승인을 거쳐 제9대 부산비엔날레 집행위원장으로 위촉되었습니다.
임동락 집행위원장은 아시아는 물론 유럽과 미국 등에서도 활발하게 활동하고 있는 한국의 대표적 조각가로 현 부산비엔날레의 전신인 부산국제아트페스티벌과 부산국제바다미술제, 부산국제야외조각심포지엄 운영위원장을 역임하였으며, 또 문화체육부 자문위원, 광주비엔날레 조직위원 등 문화예술분야에서의 다양한 경력을 보유하고 있습니다.
임동락 집행위원장이 직접 이야기한 부산비엔날레의 앞으로의 행보와 부산비엔날레의 집행위원장으로서 가지고 계신 생각들을 들어보았습니다.
The Busan Biennale has been going through the procedure of electing a new Executive Director of the Organizing Committee since April 10th after being under the system of the former acting Executive Director of the Organizing Committee since June 2014. After undergoing the process of condensing the candidates of the selection committee and nominating the Organizing Committee Chairman, the current professor of sculpture at Dong-A University, LIM Dong Lak, has been appointed as the Executive Director of the 9th Busan Biennale Organizing Committee following the final approval of the second extraordinary general meeting on May 21st.
Executive Director LIM, Dong Lak is a representative sculptor of Korea actively participating in Europe, the United States, and Asia. He served as Chairperson of the Organizing Committees for the Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival, the Busan International Sea Art Festival, and the Busan International Outdoor Sculpture Symposium, former iterations of the Busan Biennale, and has experience in various cultural art circles such as being a Ministry of Culture & Athletics advisory commissioner and a Gwangju Biennale Organizing Committee Organizer.
Let's hear about the future actions of the Busan Biennale as told directly by Executive Director LIM, Dong Lak and the thoughts he has as the Executive Director of the Busan Biennale.
Q. 제9대 집행위원장이 되신 소감을 부탁드립니다.
A. 1998년 부산국제아트페스티발 운영위원장을 맡은 이후에 다시 집행위원장으로 오게 되어 정말 감회가 새롭습니다. 20년만의 귀환이라고 외부에서 거창하게 표현을 해주시기도 하는데, 그렇게 겉으로 멋있게 들리는 화려한 표현보다는, 다시 부산비엔날레조직위원회를 위해 봉사할 수 있는 기회, 또 이 기회를 통해 부산비엔날레의 재도약을 만들어야 하는 임무가 주어졌다고 생각하고 있습니다.
Q. 그 동안 밖에서 부산비엔날레를 보시면서 어떤 생각을 하셨는지요?
A. 그 동안 많은 국•내외 작가들이 부산비엔날레와 바다미술제를 거쳐 갔습니다. 이전의 운영위원장들과 관계자들, 사무국의 노력이 반영된 성과라고 생각합니다. 하지만 여전히 숙제들도 남았다고 생각해요. 그건 제가 풀어나가야 할 과제이기도 하겠지요. 앞으로 한국의 작가들이 세계무대에서 활동할 수 있도록 길을 터주는 역할을 비롯하여 부산비엔날레가 세계적으로 더 입지를 굳혀야 하는 타이밍이라고 생각합니다. 내부적으로는 제도와 절차를 개선하고, 또 밖으로는 여러 기관과의 협조를 통하여 현실화 될 수 있도록 만들어 나갈 계획입니다.
Q. 위원장님께서는 조각가로서 세계무대에서 눈에 띄는 활동을 해오셨죠? 몇 가지 소개해주세요.
A. 일일이 소개해드리고 싶지만 짧게 말씀 드리자면, 2006년 프랑스 라 데팡스 광장에서 초대전을 했었고 그 중 ‘성장(Croissance)’이라는 작품은 영구 설치 되어있습니다. 한국작가로서는 최초라는 타이틀 때문에 많은 분들께서 기억해주고 계시죠. 2012년 이태리 베니스에서 초청되어 야외 조각전과 더불어 제69회 베니스영화제의 특별상이 저의작품으로 선정되어 미국의 헐리우드 배우이며 감독인 “로버트 레드포드”에게 수여된 적이 있습니다,
또 해운대 동백섬에 가면 볼 수 있는 인어상도 제가 아끼는 작품 중의 하나입니다.
Q. Please tell us how it felt to become the 9th Executive Director of the Organizing Committee.
A. Returning as the Executive Director after being in charge as Chairperson of the Organizing Committees for the Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival in 1998 truly brings back old memories. Some people on the outside make a grandiose expression by saying that it is a return after twenty years. But rather than hearing such impressive expressions that sound wonderful on the outside, I think I've been given an opportunity to serve for the Busan Biennale Organizing Committee and have thus been given a mission to make another leap forward for the Busan Biennale.
Q. What kind of thoughts did you have when watching the Busan Biennale from the outside?
A. Until now, many domestic and foreign artists have participated in the Busan Biennale and the Sea Art Festival. I think this is an outcome which reflects the efforts made by the executive directors, the concerned parties, and the executive offices of the past. But I think there are tasks that still remain which I will have to work out. One such task would be sorting out the timing of the Busan Biennale to secure its position even more in the world and further its role of paving the way for Korean artists to participate in the world stage in the future. I'm planning to improve the system and this procedure from the inside while continuing to make this into reality by cooperating with many organization on the outside.
Q. You've been performing notable activities on the world stage as a sculptor. Please tell us about some of them.
A. I want to introduce them one by one but to tell you briefly, I had a private viewing at La Defense, Paris in 2006 and a work called ‘Croissance’ has been permanently installed. Many people remember this because I am the first Korean artist to have made such an accomplishment. There was a time when I was invited to Venice, Italy in 2012 and my work was selected as the special prize of the 69th Venice Film Festival along with an outdoor exhibition to be awarded to Robert Redford who is a Hollywood actor and director from the United States. The statue of a mermaid which you can see in Dongbaek Island of Haeundae is also one of my cherished works.
Q. 올해 바다미술제와 내년 부산비엔날레는 어떤 방향으로 이끌어나갈 계획이신지 설명해주세요.
A. 올해 바다미술제가 채 100일도 남지 않았습니다. 다대포 해수욕장이라는 새로운 장소에서의 도전을 준비하고 있습니다. 자연환경미술제의 강점이 잘 드러날 수 있도록 준비해나갈 예정입니다. 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.
부산비엔날레의 경우, 단순한 행사로 남는 것을 넘어서, 제가 부산국제아트페스티벌을 만들 때 강조했던 ‘에꼴 드 부산’의 초심이 살아날 수 있도록 만들어나갈 계획입니다. 다른 곳이 아닌, 부산비엔날레에서만 볼 수 있는 아방가르드하고 시대를 대변할 수 있는 혁신적인 작품들을 선보일 수 있도록 하겠습니다.
Q. 앞으로의 포부를 말씀하신다면?
A. 우선 부산비엔날레가 오늘의 세계적인 미술축제로 성장할 수 있도록 응원해주신 많은 분들께 진심으로 감사하다는 말씀을 드리고 싶습니다. 부산비엔날레와 바다미술제가 부산의 소중한 자산이 될 수 있도록, 또한 부산시민들이 자부심을 느낄 수 있는 문화 컨텐츠로 입지를 굳힐 수 있도록 열심히 뛰겠습니다. ‘마부위침’이라는 사자성어가 있습니다. 그 일이 어떤 일이든, 꾸준하게 열과 성을 다해 노력하면 이루어진다는 의미입니다. 초심으로 돌아가, 세계 속의 부산비엔날레로서의 새로운 챕터를 만들 것입니다. 이를 위해 가장 필요한 것이, 여러분의 지지와 응원이라고 생각합니다. 따뜻한 시선으로 부산비엔날레와 바다미술제를 지켜봐 주십시오.
Q. 부산비엔날레의 뉴스레터를 보시는 분들께 한마디 부탁드립니다.
A. 날씨가 점점 무더워지고 있습니다. 건강관리 잘 하시기 바라며, 올해 9월, 건강한 모습으로 바다미술제가 열리는 다대포 해수욕장에서 뵙도록 하겠습니다. 기쁘고 설레는 마음으로 여러분을 맞을 수 있도록 무더위도 피해갈 열정으로 2015바다미술제를 준비해 나가겠습니다.
Q. Please explain how you're planning to lead the Sea Art Festival this year and the Busan Biennale next year.
A. There are less than 100 days remaining until the Sea Art Festival this year. We're preparing for a challenge at a new place called Dadaepo Beach. We're making preparations to fully reveal the strength of an art festival that represents the natural environment. We hope everyone will be interested.
In the case of the Busan Biennale, I'm planning to make it so that the basics of 'L'ecole de Busan' I had emphasized while creating the Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival can be revived without just remaining as a simple event. We'll show off the avant-garde innovative artworks that can speak for the times which can be seen from no other place but the Busan Biennale.
Q. What are your future resolutions?
A. First of all, I want to truly express my appreciation to the many people who have been cheering for us so that the Busan Biennale was able to grow into the world-class fine art festival that it is today. I promise to work hard so that the Busan Biennale and the Sea Art Festival can become precious assets of Busan and secure a position featuring cultural contents that Busan citizens can be proud of. There is a four-character Chinese idiom pronounced ‘Mabuwichim’ which means that you can accomplish anything if you make an effort by steadily devoting your heart and soul no matter what the work might be. I'll create a new chapter of the Busan Biennale for the world by going back to the basics. I think what we need the most to make this possible is your encouragement and support. Please keep an eye on the Busan Biennale and the Sea Art Festival.

A. The weather is getting scorching hot. Please take care of your health and we'll see you at Dadaepo Beach where the Sea Art Festival will be held in September of this year. We'll be making preparations for the Sea Art Festival 2015 with hopes to avoid the scorching hot weather so we can welcome every one of you with our delighted and excited hearts.
