A song dedicated to fire

It was conventionally believed that art transcends time and preserves itself, but the concept of the ¡®immortality¡¯ and ¡®preservation¡¯ of art began to collapse after the middle of the 20th century. SAYA, a project team consisting of Korean and Chinese artists, attempts at ¡®creative destruction¡¯ by working with the modern idea of contradictions and reversals, such as creating a large project using environmentally-friendly materials such as wood and paper, and burning it. In these works, the images of a tree tied with pieces of ¡®Sowonji¡¯, the traditional Obangsaek(five-color) paper of Korea symbolizing hopes and life, and the shape of a ship symbolizing Busan, entwine with each other in the blazing blames. Like the traditional Korean folk culture of the JeongwolDaeboreum Fire Festival (Festival celebrating the 15th day of the New Year in lunar calendar), the artists of SAYA perform a magnificent fire ritual through which they burn up their works, or their alter egos. Through such ritual, SAYA hopes to shed light on the timely spirit and the philosophical and aesthetic messages of the artists that are involved in the new forms and discourses of contemporary art.
